In the near future, automation has replaced most humans and only one candidate runs for President. Philbert Noyce is one of the few remaining human workers, and realizes that the government is conducting a campaign to the public against "the Others"... and Philbert is next.
A small-town girl, already gripped with social anxiety, moves to a big futuristic city with her mother. Exposed for the first time to urban society's emphasis on security and terrorist prevention, it isn't long before her school days are consumed by fear and paranoia. She soon finds guidance and companionship in the most unexpected of places.
After most of humanity is wiped out by nuclear war, the survivors find their lives at risk by an automated production facility, Autofac, which produces useless goods and will wipe out the remaining humans with pollution and heavy-metal poisoning unless they shut it down.
