In the Season 1 finale, Maddie reaches her 30th day in rehab, but she's distracted when the house loses another member; a painful truth about Charlotte and Nyla is revealed; Wes makes his brother's situation worse by trying to help; and Maddie and Wes reveal their feelings for one another.
Maddie worries about Wes' sobriety after his attitude changes; Wes hears conflicting stories about his brother's recent behavior and doesn't know who to trust; and Trish becomes angry with Maddie's attempts to help. Meanwhile, Charlotte opens up about Maddie's addiction; and Vern's suspicious of Cynthia.
Maddie and Charlotte attend an awkward party thrown by Rebecca's upper-class family and are horrified to see how they treat Rebecca for being in rehab. Meanwhile, Wes' ex-girlfriend shows up, claiming she's sober and bearing news of his brother; and Cynthia reconsiders her relationship with her fiancé.
Maddie's greatest fear comes true when Ellie discovers she's in rehab. Meanwhile, Charlotte presses Wes for information on Maddie's progress; and Wes, Vern and Craig spend an afternoon together.
In the episode "Heaven Backwards," which unfolds in real time, Maddie is at a loss with how to help when Trish faces a crisis. But Maddie's good intentions may have a devastating effect on her roommate. Wes is struggling with a secret, which is compounded by the chaos happening in the house. Cynthia bonds with Craig, while Charlotte reaches out to Margarita for insight involving Maddie. And a disturbing truth comes to light at Springtime Meadows. Flashbacks highlight Wes' frenetic childhood, which may have set him on his current path.
On a whim, Maddie chooses Cynthia to be her sponsor leading to friction with Charlotte, who starts to resent Cynthia's place in her daughter's life. Maddie bonds with Wes when she asks him for ideas on how to spend her time now that she's sober. Later, they have a good sober day when they break his grandmother (guest star Jenny O'Hara) out of her nursing home for an afternoon. In hopes of saving enough money to fight for custody of her daughter, Trish starts working at Margarita's restaurant, but things do not go smoothly. Ellie and Nyla begin to question what has been going on with Maddie. Flashbacks show the depths of Trish's addiction to meth, and her troubled childhood.
When the residents of an upscale rehab facility have to temporarily move into Springtime Meadows, Vern is elated that his favorite actress Olivia O'Brien is among them. But Olivia isn't what Vern expected. Maddie is feeling left out of her high school life and decides her boyfriend Zach's birthday is the perfect opportunity to reclaim her place. But when the celebration turns into a wild party, Maddie is faced with temptation to slip back into her old ways. Flashbacks highlight Vern's addiction and Cynthia's efforts to help her best friend get clean.
Wes is thrown when he gets a distraught phone call from his ex-girlfriend Harper begging him to help her. Thinking this may be an opportunity for Maddie to finally realize the dangers of addiction, Cynthia suggests Wes and Craig take Maddie along to help get Harper back into rehab. But Maddie is not prepared for what she witnesses. Meanwhile, after visiting Springtime Meadows, Charlotte can't help but wonder if she's made the right choice sending her daughter there. And Trish auditions for a reality show, thinking fame might help her get her daughter back. Flashbacks show Wes and Harper's descent into addiction.
Maddie blows off her Springtime Meadows curfew to hang out with her friends, but finds herself in an awkward position when she they run into Wes and Rebecca. Struggling to keep her double life a secret, Maddie is tempted when her friends continue their partying ways and make fun of Rebecca for her sobriety. Flashbacks reveal Maddie and Rebecca's once close friendship, and how they started on the path that would lead Rebecca to Springtime Meadows.
When Maddie gets busted for possessing alcohol at school, she's forced to choose between expulsion and rehab. When her high school guidance counselor confronts Maddie about the severity of the situation, Maddie can't see the problem with her hard-partying ways. Forced to face facts, Maddie makes the difficult decision to live with other recovering addicts at a sober living facility at night. She's determined to keep it all a secret from her peers as she continues her regular high school routine by day.
