The episode opens with Patchy the Pirate in a live-action segment, lamenting that he lost his VHS copy and setting off to find it using a treasure map. (To promote the episode, Nickelodeon launched an on-air campaign called "SpongeBob's Lost Episode".) But when he finally recovers it, the tape only shows a clip of SpongeBob walking in cycles to techno music before abruptly ending with color bars. Patchy gets angry, thinking that SpongeBob betrayed him, and gets rid of all his SpongeBob merchandise, after which the real animated episode start playing.
In 2007, this episode was adapted into a musical called "SpongeBob SquarePants Live! The Sponge Who Could Fly!"
SpongeBob falls victim to a scheme by the evil Plankton, Mr. Krabs' minuscule arch-rival with the Napoleon complex. Plankton hides out in SpongeBob's head and takes control of his brain. SpongeBob finds he must fight his own body to prevent himself from handing over the secret Krabby Patty recipe to Plankton.

In an attempt to keep his yard meticulous, Squidward picks up the single shell sitting in an otherwise perfect lawn and tosses it over to SpongeBob's yard. Finding the perfect use for his electric, high powered 'reef blower,' SpongeBob goes to work. Squidward had no idea what chaos lay in store for his quiet afternoon at home.
Encouraged by his best friend, Patrick Starfish, SpongeBob overcomes his fears and finally applies for that dream job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Challenged by the owner, Mr. Krabs, and his assistant Squidward, to prove himself worthy of the job, SpongeBob rises to the occasion, with the help of one very special spatula, by feeding a sea of ravenous anchovies.
On Christmas Eve, SpongeBob and his friends look back on some of the fun and less-than-jolly Christmas moments. And when Christmas morning comes around, they realize that what matters most is the loving warmth of the holiday cheer.
