Katie and Ian have a boring yard that is so uninviting they never even think to use it. But Chris promises that he can turn it into an entertaining mecca! He starts with demoing the existing patio and replacing it with sleek concrete slabs. He adds a custom concrete bench and fire feature conversation area and artificial turf, plus plenty of drought tolerant plants. A big new barbecue is dropped into a one-of-a-kind prep space with white metal countertops. DIY pendants hang over a metal floating bar and a metal and wood dining table is also included. All this entertaining space is topped off with shade sails and a cantilevered arbor with perforated metal to provide plenty of shade.

Nearby, he adds a custom wood plank table that is covered with a bright shade sail. Chris upcycles Eric's home-made bench into a bar and tops it with a cantilevered pergola. He also gives Eric an outdoor shower with privacy walls made from shutters. In the center of the space he includes a low bowl water feature surrounded by grass and lush landscaping.

Boring Yard Becomes Rustic Retreat in Reno Jul 27, 2015

Robert and Dana love their backyard view but hate their backyard. It's boring, overgrown and nondescript and they beg Chris to give them an inviting space for dining, entertaining and playing guitar. He delivers by giving them a large paver patio with shade and a wood arbor that defines the patio and provides a backdrop for a conversation area. He adds artificial turf, a boulder water feature and stone fireplace. He builds a custom reclaimed wood dining table for Dana and a slatted wood and boulder backless bench so Robert can play his guitar. He adds a corrugated metal and wood privacy fence, upcycled wood crates as raised planters and low-growing native landscape so as not to impede on the view.

Chris Lambton and his team takes this narrow dust bowl of a yard and converts it into a rustic romantic haven with a metal hanging bed and natural flagstone patio. Not one but two giant water features tie into one pond. Three hardscape patios and shade sails block the Reno, Nevada, heat. To define the spaces a decorative art wall is constructed and an old fence gets a new look with varying colors.

Pedro and Alicia purchased their Eichler home and have spent time redoing the inside but have neglected the outside. It's a messy space with no flow and no shade. The couple begged Chris to help them transform it into a midcentury modern entertaining space. Chris starts with demoing the existing cracked concrete pad and replacing it with concrete squares in a grid pattern. Pedro is a chef so Chris adds a large 'L' shape kitchen and bar island faced in metal mesh and an herb garden. For Alicia, he includes a large metal shade structure over a dining space. The rickety block wall is replaced with a cement and glass block water wall to become the yard's focal point.

Homeowners Melanie and Ian have a lackluster backyard and they want a space to entertain and relax in with their family and friends. Chris and his crew arrive to build a unique granite and redwood bar table with an adjoining prep station cabinet. New concrete is poured with random insets of flagstone throughout. A custom fire pit is constructed out of concrete with a rustic metal ring on top. A massive rock waterfall and pond is built with fragrant and lush plants. A secret garden is designed for their furry pets which includes non-toxic plants, mulch and frozen treats.

Bye Bye Above Ground Pool, Hello Raised Cabana-Style Deck Jul 13, 2015

Tim and Robyn Arthur can't use their backyard. The deck is too small for a table and there are no railings separating the deck from the above-ground pool. Chris comes to their rescue by demoing the deck and pool, and building a new large cabana-style deck with dining space, grilling space and bar. He includes a metal and wood railing for safety and drapes for privacy. Stairs lead down to a new concrete-and-turf checked patio with a lounging area and unique water feature. Finally, grasses and birch trees are added for a beachy vibe.

Wendy and Demond have a plain backyard. They'd like an outdoor space to cook and chill in so Chris comes to their aide. The existing sod and old brick pathway is removed and replaced with a new flagstone pathway. A new concrete patio is poured and a beautiful redwood pergola is built onto it with some reclaimed lumber and shutters as the backdrop. A custom outdoor kitchen is constructed with a special countertop and wood siding base. A beautiful water feature surrounded by herbs and veggies becomes a functional part of the yard. Masonry and wood benches provide an entertainment spot around the metal fire feature. A one-of-a-kind sports scoreboard is created for their energetic baseball-loving family along with new sod and surrounding plants!

Sonora persuades Chris to come see her backyard in her brand new house -- a big empty space with one huge redwood tree in the middle. Using that for inspiration, Chris comes up with a mountain retreat design that starts with covering up her existing concrete pad with natural stone and building a wood privacy screen to block out her neighbor's huge RV. He adds a large ledgestone water feature as well as a big wooden deck topped with a custom-made dining table. He uses boulders to define a fire pit area and adds large redwood trees, cedars and ferns. Finally, he turns a ski lift chair into a comfy swing and surrounds it with lush landscaping.

Amanda and Tyler have a boring backyard. They'd like a place to eat and entertain so Chris agrees to help them with their vision. The existing covered deck is enhanced by updating the existing railing. A surround is built for Tyler's smoker so that it becomes his outdoor kitchen with a granite countertop prep area. The side stairs which were awkward are replaced with corner stairs that provide more room as well as drop down to a huge new concrete patio complete with a brick fire pit. A large metal water feature becomes the focal point of the yard. Wood and metal privacy screens are built to hide the back neighbor's house. Horse troughs are repurposed into raised planter beds. And finally, the master bedroom's landing is enlarged and a curved brick seat wall is added to make the space more cohesive. Large trees and colorful landscaping is added, along with new sod.

Chris and his crew transform this trashy trove into a treasure paradise with a beefy redwood pergola with a rain chain water feature and a custom faux dining table, a beautiful stamped concrete pad leading to a stone fire pit with custom made beefy lounge chairs and redwood block end tables. To soften the hardscapes, colorful plants and new sod is installed throughout the yard.

Inspired by Austin's eclectic and funky scene, Chris designs an outdoor room with a lounge area with low bench seating and a covered pergola, grass for the couple's dog and an outdoor bar faced in wood and metal. He also adds a performing stage with a colorful plexiglass screen backdrop, a shell keg water feature and fence for privacy. Finally, for some fun, Chris adds a graffiti inspired dart board and a large building block game.

Chris and team head to Blog Cabin in Central Florida to transform the spacious backyard property into a relaxing and entertaining hang out. He builds a slatted privacy wall with built-in benches for lounging, complete with living walls to showcase Florida's lush landscaping. Nearby, he adds a metal fire pit with seating and a pebble pathway leading to the large cobblestone patio. On it, he builds two kitchen islands, one for dining and one for grilling that are faced in stone. Finally, he builds a bocce court and two waterski Adirondack chairs to complete this lakeside retreat.

The addition of a bench made from fireplace flues and a custom fire pit add to the feel of relaxing in a rustic resort. Level one is off the master bedroom, accessed via a new glass door to take in the view and features "T" arbors framing the view of her new space. All three levels are connected by new decorative concrete steps. Level two features a hot tub and custom fire feature. Level three features a massive, ancient olive tree. The three terraces are ringed with retaining wall seating for 40! The new space is also warmed up with additional plantings of Redwood trees, Japanese Maples, and a Willow tree.

Dave and Emilie Beecroft love the bright colors, water and painted arches of Mexico, but have a backyard with a tiny deck and awkward spaces that make it a far cry from a resort destination. Mexico is brought to their backyard with the addition of a large concrete patio stamped to look like Mexican tile, a water feature with a Mexican clay pot and a fire pit lined with Mexican saltillo tiles. This young couple receives a nature inspired old world makeover with a touch of modern. The topography of the yard has been transformed creating natural elevation changes and boulders have been added for seating on the new elevation. Fruit trees now surround the boulder seating area. Near the house, there's a leaf stamped pathway leading to a maple leaf stamped patio. On the patio stands a 16-foot high, hand huned pergola. The hand huning or planing of the wood is an old world style of decorating the structure in a one of a kind fashion. The structure is fastened together using the time tested techniques of mortise and tenon joinery. A touch of modern is added, as large planter pots become cushioned seats. Fruit trees now surround the boulder seating area. Near the house, there's a leaf stamped pathway leading to a maple leaf stamped patio.

The back patio expansion includes a three-tiered pergola remodel that's tricked out in custom metal art, sunroofs and a brick basket-weave extension pad. In the yard, an oversized octagon-shaped fire pit is plunked in the middle of a tranquil garden to give this backyard a chic yet serene style.

Next, efforts are turned toward rehab'ing an existing patio by adding flagstone to increase the "hang out" space.
